Welcome to the Merit Rating Board

What We Do . . .
As a state agency within the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, the Merit Rating Board (MRB) maintains operator driving records consisting of traffic law violations, at-fault and comprehensive insurance claim records, and out-of-state driving records. Our primary mission is to maintain and update individual driving records and to report this information to Massachusetts auto insurers and other government agencies involved in transportation and public safety. The MRB also administers the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP).

What You Need to Know . . .
Massachusetts moved from a fixed-and-established auto insurance market to a competitive market. This means that for policies effective on or after April 1, 2008, auto insurers may offer different prices for different insurance packages.

What do these changes mean for you? For policies effective on or after April 1, 2008, insurers may use the point-based system of the SDIP or develop their own merit rating plan to determine discounts for safe drivers and surcharges for drivers with at-fault accidents and traffic violations. But for policies effective before April 1, 2008, insurers must use the SDIP rating system to determine how they will impose surcharges and issue credits on your premium.
