DEVAL L. PATRICK

GOVERNOR

TIMOTHY P. MURRAY

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Paul Reville

SECRETARY

March 30, 2009 - For immediate release:

Governor Swears in Commissioners Sherri Killins

Governor Deval Patrick today performed the swearing in of Sherri Reneé Killins as Commissioner of Early Education and Care for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Education Secretary Paul Reville, Board of Early Education and Care Chair Sharon Scott Chandler and Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Mitchell Chester joined the Governor, Legislators and early education and care and after-school providers for the ceremony.

“Commissioner Killins is a proven leader who understands that high quality, accessible and affordable early education and care is the foundation of a strong education for our students and is vital to our work to prevent and close the achievement gap,” said Secretary Reville.  “Today, I welcome Dr. Killins to our strong and accomplished education leadership team and ask that she employ her creativity, energy and commitment to support children and families throughout our state.”

Massachusetts is one of a small number of states in the nation with a department dedicated to promoting access to quality early education and care programs. The Governor's Education Action agenda includes a sharp focus on educational and enrichment programming for young children so they arrive ready to learn when they reach Kindergarten.

“I am honored and humbled to serve a Governor and a Secretary that put children – our youngest children – at the heart of the education agenda,” said Commissioner Killins. “I want you to know that I am committed to serving the whole state of Massachusetts, from the Berkshires to Boston, to the Cape and Islands.  I am encouraged by the many people all across the state who I have already met.  They’re been tremendously welcoming and helpful in creating a shared understanding of the challenges we face in maintaining and growing quality and access.”
