The mission of the Department of Transitional Assistance is to assist low-income individuals and families to meet their basic needs, increase their incomes, and improve their quality of life.
Farmers’ Markets Expand Services for Low-Income Residents
Farmers' markets can be a great source of fresh, nutritious, locally-grown food for you and your family. Through a partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) and the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), 22 organizations received grants to help farmers' markets accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for food purchases. The grants allow farmers' markets to buy or rent equipment to process SNAP benefits through the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system. This program increases access to farmers' markets for low-income residents.
The communities that received the grants are: Bernardston, Beverly, Boston, Cambridge, Dedham, Gloucester, Greenfield, Holyoke, Lawrence, North Adams, Salem, Somerville, South Hadley, Springfield/North Adams and Worcester.
