The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) makes nursing home survey information available to help consumers evaluate the quality of care provided by the Commonwealth's Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing homes. Nursing homes are inspected at least every 9-15 months to assess compliance with federal standards of care, such as adequacy of staffing, quality of care, and cleanliness of facilities. The Survey Performance Tool for Nursing Homes is a tool developed to aid consumers in their choice of a nursing home.

The Division of Health Care Quality recently completed a survey of responsible party satisfaction with the personal care, services and environment for residents in nursing homes across Massachusetts. The survey measured the satisfaction of a daughter, son, spouse or other responsible party with a nursing home's staff and administration, physical aspects of the home, activities provided to residents, personal care, food and meals, and residents' personal rights.
