Established in 1882, the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea is a multifaceted health care facility available to eligible veterans of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Soldiers' Home is inspected annually by the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Department of Public Health.
Our mission is to provide the best health care possible to eligible veterans who reside in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

As a result of its exceptional health care services and the professionalism and expertise of its staff, the hospital is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Public Health. Our mission is to provide the highest level of comprehensive care, while always respecting the psycho social, spiritual and cultural needs for our veterans their families, and always striving to extend comfort, dignity and responsive care to all of our patients. We actively promote individual and family participation in the formulation and implementation of the plan for care; from admission to discharge.
Dormitory Residencies
Located atop Powder Horn Hill, the highest of the hills that semicircle Boston harbor, The Soldiers' Home is really a small, self-sustaining "city", featuring its own library; dry cleaning; barber shops; an auditorium and recreation rooms; a dining room and canteen; and even its own pharmacy. Also available to residents are Catholic, Protestant and Jewish chaplains; counselors; recreational programs; regularly held beanos, coffee hours and numerous outside trips. The safety and well-being of our residents is of paramount concern, as evidenced by our Campus Police Force; medical emergency alert system; and new fire alarm system. Residents can also fully utilize all of the many clinics at the Outpatient Department for their health care needs.
Out-Patient Department
The Out-Patient Department offers a wide range of medical services. Open Monday Through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for walk-in and scheduled appointments our services include:

Services are available to veterans with out charge. We accept medical insurance plans and require that all veterans provide disclosure of their insurance coverage. If insurance does not cover the service, or if the veteran has no insurance, there is never an out-of-pocket charge.
The Chelsea Soldiers’ Home is a state-funded, fully accredited health care complex that offers veterans quality care, full-time residential accommodations and multi-service out-patient department. The tradition of service to our nation's veterans is surpassed only by our continuing commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and in the future.
Soldiers’ Home School of Practical Nursing
The Soldiers’ Home School of Practical Nursing has been preparing men and women for a career in nursing since 1956. The school is a forty-two week, hospital based program located on the campus of the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea.
The Soldiers’ Home School of Practical Nursing is approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Students attending the program come from many surrounding cities. Each year the school accepts up to forty-four full time students of various ages and backgrounds.
The program of learning is designed to provide the learner with organized instruction and individualized learning experiences. Students’ clinical experiences include; acute care, long term care, maternal - newborn, community pediatric, and geriatric nursing.
The Soldiers’ Home School of Practical Nursing has an excellent reputation within the nursing and health care communities. Soldiers’ Home graduates are well respected for their nursing knowledge and are eagerly sought after by employers from all types of health care facilities.
Throughout the years, the school has maintained a high passing rate on the NCLEX-PN (licensing exam), a rate that has been consistently above the national average.
