Volunteer Opportunities

The Massachusetts Volunteers Providing Services to Refugees (MVPSTAR) Project provides Intensive Case Management and Literacy/Life Skills Training services to African refugees, particularly the homebound Somali Bantus and West Africans. Direct services are provided through a statewide corps of volunteers who are recruited, screened, trained, and supervised by Volunteer Coordinators located at the seven Refugee Resettlement Agencies that resettle the majority of African refugees. The Project, funded through a discretionary grant from the Office of Refugee Resettlement, is coordinated statewide by ORI.

The New American Center (NAC) in Lynn provides services to the North Shore’s growing refugee population, including case management, translation and interpretation, citizenship education, and youth adjustment services. The NAC is looking for volunteers to help with the Center’s summer program for refugee youth. Volunteers for all areas of the program are needed, with highest need for English language tutoring to a large number of youth who have recently arrived from Burma. If you are interested in having some fun with Massachusetts’ newest arrivals, please contact Natasha Soolkin at 781-593-0100, x18 or Natasha_rcam@yahoo.com.
