Wondering how you can fit more activity into your busy day? Divide your activities into smaller chunks. Gradually build up your activity as you get in better shape. Try these tips to get yourself and your kids moving more:

Indoors

  • Play with your kids- dance, jump rope, play tag
  • Dance to your favorite music
  • Limit your “screen time”— the time you spend watching TV, playing video games, and using the computer— to 2 hours each day.
  • Exercise while watching TV. (use hand weights, stationary bicycle/ treadmill/ stair climber, or stretch) Or challenge your family members to contests—who can do the most crunches or push-ups?
  • Do stretches before bedtime. It can help you and your kids relax and sleep better.

Outdoors

  • Take family walks after dinner.
  • Go for a jog or ride your bike.
  • Walk to the grocery store and to other errands.
  • Plant a garden. Check to see if you have a community garden and join your neighbors in planting and picking.
  • Check with your local YMCA or Boys and Girls Club about free after school programs.
  • Walk your kids to school or volunteer to chaperone a Walking School Bus at your child’s school.
