Maternal and Child Health Block Grant (Title V)
What Is Title V and Maternal and Child Health Block Grant?
The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Block Grant Program is a federally funded grant program to improve the health of mothers and children. Also often called Title V, the program was authorized by Title V of the Social Security Act of 1935. The Title V Block Grant funds states to develop the infrastructure and activities for maternal and child health through Formula Block Grants.
You can make a difference in the health of women, children and families!
Formula Block Grants fund states to develop partnerships and infrastructure-building activities likely to help the state improve on 18 national measures related to Title V maternal and child health challenges. In addition, each state selects up to 10 state measures and 10 priorities to guide “MCH efforts. The process of selecting state measures and priorities occurs every five years as part of a comprehensive needs assessment process. The Department of Public Health, Bureau of Family Health and Nutrition manages this needs assessment process, which is beginning now and will continue over the next year. Public input is critical to helping us in developing measures, selecting priorities and developing the application. The Bureau seeks input from families, individuals, youth, local service providers, medical providers, state-level agencies, academics, advocacy groups and other professionals.
In addition, the Department of Public Health applies for block grant funds every year. Your input is important at all times to help the state understand how well programs are working and make adjustments.
PLEASE submit YOUR comments. Tell people who work on the MCH Block Grant what you think would help improve maternal and child health for your family, community or the state. Tell them your priorities. Ask your questions. Input is summarized in the annual application anonymously—you will not be identified.
