MCI Shirley Medium Wheels for the World donates 334 wheelchairs

MILFORD (July 2009)--The Wheels for the World program at MCI Shirley Medium recently provided 334 restored wheelchairs to Global Aid Network, an international outreach organization dedicated to accelerating a Christian ministry in the disability communities.

Wheels for the World is a used wheelchair restoration program located at MCI Shirley Medium.  Since the start of the program in July 2007, 600 wheelchairs have been shipped worldwide to developing countries.  Instructor Mark Kelley (pictured) supervises the 20 inmates who are currently in this Vocational Education Program.

By participating in the Wheels for the World program, inmates can learn a variety of transferable job and workplace skills necessary for future employment when released.  Such vocational training is crucial to an inmate’s successful reentry back to the community.

The MCI Shirley Medium program has coordinated delivery to Ukraine, Peru, Cuba, China and other countries around the world.  All wheelchairs are donated.
