Preliminary investigation by Trooper Russell Phippen indicates that 25-year-old William A. Pfeil of Andover, was operating a 2009 Kia Rio on Route 495 North in the break down lane when the vehicle lost control, struck a message board located on the right shoulder of the roadway, and  rolled over before striking the guardrail adjacent to the break down lane. Pfeil, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and suffered serious injuries. He was transported by medical helicopter to Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston where he succumbed to his injuries.

The facts and circumstances of the crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Troopers were assisted at the scene by Littleton Fire Department, Ayer Fire Department, and MassHighway.

In order to accommodate the safe landing of the medical helicopter all north and south bound lanes of Route 495 were closed for approximately 45 minutes. Due to the continuing crash investigation the right and middle lane of 495 North was closed approximately one additional hour.
