State Police Investigate Fatal Crash in the Otis Rotary in Bourne
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Gerald Donovan indicates that 32-year-old Shawn Potrzuski of Attleboro was operating a 2003 Dodge Durango on Route 28 North in Bourne when he lost control of his vehicle in the Otis Rotary, exited the road to the right, crossed over Connery Avenue, entered the woods and struck a tree. Potrzuski, who was wearing his safety belt, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene. The front seat passenger, 53-year-old Karen Coffey of Attleboro, who was wearing her safety belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Falmouth Hospital. The rear seat passenger, 46-year-old Robert Coffey of Attleboro, who was not wearing his safety belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Falmouth Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
As a result of the preliminary investigation, Potrzuski was arrested and charged with Motor Vehicle Homicide, Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Operating Under the Influence of Liquor Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Speeding.
Although this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, it appears that both alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors. The Bourne Fire Department, Bourne Police Department, and MassHighway assisted Troopers at the scene.
Since the crash scene was well off the roadway, no road closures resulted from this crash.
