The Special Assignment Unit is a valuable asset to the citizens of the Commonwealth and is dedicated to providing a specialized law enforcement presence at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Enforcement of laws pertaining to the security and safety of the general public and Registry employees is the primary focus of the unit. Special Assignment in partnership with the Medical Affairs Unit of the Registry of Motor Vehicles, aggressively conducts quality statewide investigations pertaining to the abuse and misuse of handicapped/veterans placards and license plates. This is done through educating the public and other law enforcement agencies of changes in the laws and/or policies pertaining to the use of handicapped/veteran placards and license plates. The unit also provides a high visibility, authoritative State Police presence to ensure a safe environment for all employees and customers at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Special Assignment aids the Registrar in maintaining an on-going positive and constructive relationship with the Department of State Police.
