Governor Patrick visits local businesses in Lowell yesterday and talks with students at the Traffick Jam event.
- Economic Recovery – Yesterday in Lowell, Governor Patrick stated that the Commonwealth is on track to climb out of the recession. Citing his discussions with experts and economists, Governor Patrick said: "we should start coming out of this in the third or fourth quarter this year, but we will not come roaring out of this. It will be gradual and we will come out stronger." The Governor attributes the Commonwealth’s stronger standing compared to other states being the result of forward-thinking economic development decisions made over the past two years to invest in burgeoning fields such as nanotechnology, life sciences, green technologies, education and health care. During his visit to Lowell, Governor Patrick toured downtown, met with business owners and residents, attended an anti-gun violence event at the United Teen Equality Center, and met with the Lowell Sun editorial board.

- Clean Energy Leaders – As part of Governor Patrick’s plan to maximize the benefits of renewable power across the state and to reach his goal of 250 MW of solar generation installed in the Commonwealth by 2017, Massachusetts has received nearly $22 million in federal stimulus funds for projects enhancing energy efficiency at state-owned buildings and facilities. Grants supporting nine new wind energy projects have been awarded by the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust through the new Commonwealth Wind Community-Scale Wind initiative. “We plan to begin investing these federal dollars immediately in projects that will boost the Massachusetts green economy while reducing our carbon footprint and providing long-term energy savings for the public facilities and agencies across the Commonwealth,’’ said Governor Patrick. “These federal funds will finance numerous worthwhile projects to create green-collar jobs in the Commonwealth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use energy more efficiently,” said U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy. “I commend Governor Patrick for his leadership in the all-important effort to achieve a sustainable energy future.” Learn more about the project here.
