Governor Patrick testified in support of his CORI reform legislation at a State House hearing yesterday.
- Improving Public Safety, Expanding Job Opportunities – In testimony before the Joint Committee on the Judiciary yesterday, Governor Deval Patrick called for meaningful Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) reform that will enhance employment and economic opportunity for citizens with criminal records and provide instant and accurate criminal record information to prospective employers and housing providers. Following the Governor’s testimony in support of CORI reform, Secretary of Public Safety Kevin Burke pushed for action on legislation to increase ex-offender supervision and training opportunities for inmates, another component of the Administration’s comprehensive public safety package. “Given that a job is critical to re-entry and preventing recidivism, it is important from a public safety point of view that we not limit their chance to get back on their feet and stay there,” said Governor Patrick. “Fix CORI in the ways we propose and we will have taken a step forward both for ex-offenders and for the public at large.” Learn more here.

- CNBC: Massachusetts a Top Ten State for Business – Governor Patrick and his administration are working hard to create jobs, support business growth and expand economic opportunity across the Commonwealth. According to a CNBC survey on the country’s best states to do business in, their work is paying off. The CNBC report places Massachusetts at number 8 in the top ten, ahead of North Carolina and Georgia and the only New England state in the group. States were rated on 40 different measures of competiveness and input from business groups including the National Association of Manufacturers. Massachusetts ranked 1st in Education, 2nd in Access to Capital, 5th in Technology and Innovation and 6th in Quality of Life. Read the full survey here.
- Extending the Blue Line to Lynn – Transportation Secretary James Aloisi, Jr. yesterday announced that the Patrick-Murray Administration will fully fund completion of the next step in the planning process to extend the MBTA Blue Line to Lynn. “Extending the Blue Line will transform Lynn, opening access to jobs for Lynn residents and access to affordable housing and commercial development for everyone," said Governor Deval Patrick. "That's why investing in public transit projects like this one is one of our foremost priorities." Read more in the Lynn Daily Item and the Marblehead Reporter.
- Zoo Budget – An editorial in today’s Boston Globe advocates for Zoo New England to streamline its operations of the Franklin Park and Stone Zoos. The Patrick-Murray Administration has called on zoo management to present a plan within 90 days to put their facilities on firmer financial footing. “With Massachusetts facing serious revenue shortfalls, Governor Patrick recently vetoed $4 million in state subsidies for the two zoos. As a result of the governor’s action, zoo officials are asking state lawmakers to override the veto. Legislators should reject this request, and not only because of short-term budget constraints. This is an opportunity to rethink the original mission.” Read the full editorial in the Boston Globe.
