Governor Patrick talked with young people participating in summer camp programs at UMass Boston yesterday: “What I’m about, and what I want our administration to be about are these young people. What are we doing to make a better way for them? What are we doing to give them a reason to look up rather than down? What are the hard choices that we have to make—because, by the way, there are hard choices that we make about how to invest in the public good, and what constitutes the public good.”
- Poised for Economic Recovery – A recent edition of Newsweek highlights the recovery of the American economy, focusing on the shovel-ready stimulus efforts across the country including one in Westport, Mass. that is “one small manifestation of President Barack Obama's ambitious strategy for jump-starting the economy. … As business dwindled over the past two years, the firm (P.J. Keating) laid off about a dozen people. ‘We definitely would have been faced with another half-dozen layoffs had we not gotten these stimulus projects,’ (David) Baker says. Instead, the company kept all its remaining 300 employees, and hired five new ones.” Read more here.

- ‘Effects of stimulus plan kick in’ – Read articles in the Boston Globe about federal stimulus funds benefitting local cities and towns in areas such as education and infrastructure: “Millions of dollars in federal stimulus money is helping to fund school budgets in Everett, Lawrence, Lowell, and 25 other local public school districts. Assembly on the Mystic, a 66.5-acre development off Interstate 93, last week received $15 million to help build an access road to the retail, residential, and commercial development being built in Somerville.” Read more here and here.

- Clean Energy Leader – In January, Governor Patrick set new goals for wind power by announcing his plan to develop enough energy generated from wind to power 800,000 homes in the state by 2020. - Commitment to Public Safety – Governor Patrick expressed concern yesterday over the recent public transit accidents in Boston. A new MBTA board will assemble this fall as part of the Governor’s comprehensive transportation reform plan, which overhauls all state transportation agencies, is expected to include professional planners, financial specialists, and a civil engineer. The new team will lead an increase in efficiency and fiscal responsibility with a downsized bureaucracy inside the agency.
