- Remembering Eunice Kennedy Shriver – Governor Patrick released the following statement on the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver: “Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a champion for people with intellectual disabilities and for human dignity. She embodied the Kennedy family’s proud tradition of public service, and with tireless advocacy and unwavering compassion, forever changed millions of people’s lives for the better. Our hearts go out to her family.”
- Summer Jobs for Youth- Governor Patrick, along with Mayor Menino, Secretary Bump and U.S. Representative Michael Capuano all touted the success of the youth summer jobs that were granted to over 10,000 teens throughout the Commonwealth. The summer jobs are aimed to offer new life experiences and teach important lessons about responsibility. "Summer jobs are essential to helping our young people understand the importance of responsibility and commitment," said Governor Patrick. "Thanks to an innovative combination of state and federal recovery funds, more kids than ever have a chance to work, earn and learn this summer." Learn more here.

Governor Patrick speaks with teens that are part of the summer jobs project
- Commitment to a Green Economy – Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island are all apart of National Grid’s effort to create a smart grid program. The smart grid will provide hundreds of thousands with a clean, efficient energy network of the future while creating new jobs and economic development opportunities for the region. The smart grid will lower carbon emissions and utility bills. National Grid has just applied for federal stimulus funds. "These grants will support our own recent smart grid initiatives to modernize the electric grid in Massachusetts," said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. "The goal is to save money and to give more control to both grid operators and consumers." Read more here.
- Commitment to Transportation Reform – Governor Patrick is committed to looking out for the best interests of MBTA riders to ensure the safe, efficient management of the authority. He has asked for an independent team to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the finances and the management structure at the MBTA.
- Continuing with transportation reform, a recent study shows the new South Coast Rail will create over 3500 permanent jobs, and stimulate $500 million of economic activity. “By thoughtfully planning for rail as part of a larger economic development plan, we can create great places for people to live and work,” Governor Patrick said. - Asian Longhorn Beetle Awareness Month – Governor Patrick has declared August the Asian Longhorn Beetle Awareness Month. This invasive species has caused havoc throughout the state, and was first spotted a year ago by a Worcester resident. It is important to notice these pests in order to prevent more of our trees from being killed.
