Mass.Gov Citizen Alerts
In order to keep the public informed about critical events, from time to time the Mass.Gov portal will display a Citizen Alert to notify citizens about the following:
- Declaration of state of emergency
- Homeland security
- Hazardous materials spills
- Extreme weather/State government closings
- Radiologic or seismic activity
- Amber Alerts (State Police)
- Bioterrorism or pandemic
- Evacuation
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is responsible for posting Citizen Alerts. The Massachusetts State Police is responsible for posting Amber Alerts. The Executive Office for Health and Human Services and the Department of Public Health are responsible for posting bioterrorism or critical health alerts.
Citizen Alerts will appear on the Mass.Gov home page and all Executive Office/ Agency home pages using the Mass.Gov portal. They are graphically designed to catch the eye, and include the International Safety Alert Symbol or the Amber Alert logo, as well as a brief description of the emergency and links to a landing page with the full text of the alert.
State offices closing/early release of state employees
Notifications of early release or state office closings for Executive Department employees will also be published on the Citizen Alert module.
