Pell Grants
Federal Pell Grants are need-based and, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid. Although the amount of each grant depends on a number of factors, Pell Grants for the 2009 - 2010 award year have been capped at $6,000.

Academic Competitiveness Grants and National SMART Grants
Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACGs) are available to low-income students who have completed a rigorous high school curriculum (as recognized by the Secretary of Education) and are in their first or second year of college. National SMART Grants are available to low-income students who in their third or fourth year of college who are pursuing a major in science, technology, engineering and other science fields, or a critical foreign language (as determined by the Secretary of Education) and has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.
