Chairman Walter Sullivan


Chairman Walter Sullivan was appointed to lead the State Racing Commission in November of 2007. As Chairman of the State Racing Commission, Walter Sullivan is responsible for supervising the overall management of the Racing Commission on a day-to-day basis.

Mr. Sullivan previously served as chairman of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) and chairman of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC). Both positions have provided the Chairman with an extensive management and regulatory experience background. As head of the MCAD, Walter Sullivan investigated and adjudicated claims of unlawful discrimination in employment, housing and education. He successfully enhanced the quality of agency investigations and reduced a backlog of cases. During his tenure at the ABCC, Chairman Sullivan was responsible for regulating a $3 billion industry and implemented new programs to address the nonpayment of taxes by licensees, underage drinking and community policing.

Prior to his work at the MCAD and ABCC, Mr. Sullivan served as chief of the Attorney General’s Asset Forfeiture Unit and as an assistant district attorney for Plymouth and Middlesex counties. He holds a law degree from Boston College Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Boston College.
