Are you seeking a career in Criminal Justice? The Essex County Sheriff's Department is seeking individuals interested in joining a multi-talented, multi-cultural and enthusiastic department of correctional professional. Correctional Officers provide care, custody, and control for both sentenced inmates and pre-trial detainees.
Application and Review Process
Applicants qualifying will be subject to an extensive selection process which may include, but not be limited to: evaluation of training and experience, interview, performance test, psychological evaluation, employment record, fingerprint and background check, medical examination, and drug screening. This process will assess the candidate in terms of their knowledge, skills, abilities, physical fitness, and personal attributes required for the successful performance of the job of an entry-level correctional officer in the Essex County Sheriff's Office. The entire selection and assessment process may be completed in 6 to 8 weeks.
Employee Training
Upon being hired, the entry or lateral level correctional officer will begin a one (1) year probation period and enter a five (5) week Field Training and Evaluation (FTE) Program. The purpose of this program is to develop the highest quality correctional officer by establishing a comprehensive system of observation, evaluation, and review. The program is designed to promote the Department's values and achieve its mission.
