Treasurer Cahill Presents Saving Bonds To Winners of Saving Makes “Cents” Banking Day Poster Contest

Program promotes the “ABC’s” of money management with elementary school students

BOSTON, MA – State Treasurer Tim Cahill today honored elementary school children from across the Commonwealth for their participation in a Banking Day Poster contest.

Treasurer Cahill hosted more than 50 students, parents, school administrators and elected officials at a ceremony in the State House’s Great Hall where he announced the winners of the Saving Makes "Cents" Banking Day Poster contest.

"It is never too early to start learning about the importance of saving money," said Treasurer Cahill. "I would like to congratulate all of the students that participated in the contest, as well as thank the teachers that have made financial education a priority in their classrooms."

The Banking Day Poster contest called for students in Grades 3 through 5 to create a poster to remind fellow students to bring their money in for banking day. The contest’s goal is to promote the importance of saving money all year. First place winners in each grade level were awarded $500 savings bonds, second place finalists received $200 savings bonds, and third place finalists received a $100 savings bond.

Saving Makes "Cents" is a school banking program run by Treasurer Cahill’s Financial Education Department. Local schools and banks work together to teach basic monetary concepts, including how to open a savings account, the origin of money and basic budgeting. Treasurer Cahill's office provides a curriculum that is taught by classroom teachers and bank representatives, and bank representatives give students opportunities to open savings accounts and make regular deposits at school. Saving Makes "Cents" operates in more than 400 schools statewide thanks to the help of nearly 175 financial institutions.
