Report cover New State Report Calls for Greater Emphasis on Workplace-Based Adult Education

A new report by the Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board finds that greater coordination and focus is needed to help Bay State working adults achieve economic success. The report finds that too few working adults are able to access the basic skills and education training needed in today’s global economy.

 “Tens of thousands of working adults are being left behind in today’s global economy because they have not been able to access workplace education that will provide them with new skills that can help them move up the economic ladder,” said Governor Deval Patrick. “We must take a comprehensive approach that engages state, regional and local partners and providers to educate and train working adults.”

Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Suzanne M. Bump, whose office oversees the MWIB noted, “We know that adult literacy and basic education are absolutely essential to a person’s ability to earn a decent wage. We must create a better framework for providing adult-basic education and training that ensures working adults can get the training they need, and do so without having to confront countless barriers, which for too long has been the case.”

These meetings are open to the public, and are aimed at advancing Governor Patrick’s commitment to encourage civic engagement and public participation in solving public policy challenges.

Unemployment Insurance Extended Benefits

On June 30, 2008, Congress passed into law a program allowing states to extend unemployment insurance benefits.  Governor Patrick has taken action to make this extension effective immediately in Massachusetts.  For more information about these extended benefits, go to Information on Unemployment Insurance Extended Benefits.



New Maximum Weekly Unemployment Insurance Benefit Amount

The new maximum rate is effective for new unemployment claims established on or after Sunday, October 5th. More.
