New family traditions and updated holiday classics for a healthier Thanksgiving

It’s November, the leaves have turned brilliant and are now falling. As we get ready for Thanksgiving, how about adding new – or bringing back – fun family traditions that will use up some of those holiday calories. While the turkey is cooking get the crowd out for a game of touch football. Here are the rules. After dinner, throw on your jackets and enjoy a brisk walk around the neighborhood.

Although fall is coming to an end, there’s still plenty of time to hit the trails. Bike trails are abundant in Massachusetts. Check out the Department of Conservation’s Forest and Park Trails or TrailLink, formerly Rails to Trails.

There are still a few farmers’ markets open into November with delicious locally grown apples and pears and a variety of pumpkins and squash for your Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving is about sharing good food with friends and family. With healthy updates to classic dishes, using high-impact flavors like fresh herbs, spices and seasonal fruits and vegetables, you can cut down on butter, cream and salt. Click here for healthy updates to classic dishes and other twists on your traditional holiday favorites.
