Utilizing funds recovered by the AGO through a nationwide state-federal settlement over unlawful foreclosures, the Office of Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley (AGO) previously announced the HomeCorps: Borrower Recovery Initiative Grant (Recovery Grant), which was designed to prevent homelessness and help borrowers stabilize and recover after the loss of home ownership due to foreclosure or after eviction that follows a foreclosure.

The Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) was awarded a two year grant totaling $7.4 million to administer the Borrower Recovery Initiative.

Beginning in September 2012 through September 2014, the grant funded 19 borrower recovery sites supported by 21 case managers across the state to work directly with families and individuals to prevent homelessness, provide assistance to families transitioning from homeownership following foreclosure, and provide financial education and counseling to individuals and families facing eviction. The sites received referrals from the AG’s Office and the funding enabled direct assistance for over 1,400 households over the course of the 2-year grant term.
