Almost all male U.S. citizens must register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of your 18 th birthday (see who must register here).

There is not currently a draft and therefore, registration does not mean that you will be inducted into the armed forces, this is simply the way that the Selective Service systems maintains records.

Women are not required to register with the Selective Service, but are certainly eligible to do so (read why women are not required here).

There are a number of ways that you can register:

  • Online by visiting the Selective Service System website;
  • By mail: pick up a Selective Service "mail-back" registration form at your local post office or mail in a completed Selective Service reminder card (likely mailed to you around your 18 th birthday);
  • By checking the appropriate box (box #29) on a Federal Student Financial Aid (FASFA) form;
  • At your high school - ask to speak with a Selective Service Registrar.
