Statement of AG Coakley on Department of Public Utilities Decision to Reduce Unitil Rate Hike Request

"Unitil's requested rate hike could not have come at a worse time for Massachusetts customers dealing with today's difficult economy. While our office opposed any rate increase in gas and electric costs, we are pleased at least that the DPU reduced the company's request to pass more than $22 million in costs from the 2008 ice storm on to ratepayers. Customers never should have been subject to the public safety threats that resulted from Unitil's failures during that storm, nor should they be required to pay for the company's failures now."
