AG Coakley Hosts National Cyber Crime Conference
Delivers Welcoming Remarks to Over 450 Law Enforcement Officers from Across the Country to Kick Off National Cyber Crime Conference
BOSTON — Today, Attorney General Martha Coakley offered welcoming remarks to commence the 2012 National Cyber Crime Conference, the first multi-day conference of its kind aimed at training law enforcement about the latest tools available to seize digital evidence.
“We are pleased that we have such overwhelming attendance at this national conference dealing with issues essential to all law enforcement and prosecutors,” said AG Coakley. “Continuous training on the seizure and analysis of digital evidence is vital because virtually every crime now has a cyber component and the technology is always evolving. This conference will help give law enforcement and prosecutors the tools they need to keep up with the criminals who look for ways to take advantage of that technology.”
The three-day conference consists of multiple breakout sessions, in which attendees will be trained on a wide range of topics pertaining to digital forensic analysis, including mobile device forensics, decryption, and the newest analytic software. Attendees will be able to learn how to seize and analyze evidence from basic mobile devices, iPhones and iPads, and even gaming consoles. Additional topics, such as cyber bullying, human trafficking, anti-piracy, and data breaches will be covered, as well as training to improve the prosecution of cybercrimes. There are 60 speakers that will be conducting the various sessions.
More than 450 law enforcement officers and prosecutors from across the nation are attending the conference, with 21 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands being represented by attendees. Law enforcement and prosecutors are attending from, among many others, the FBI, US Attorney’s Office, Department of Homeland Security – ICE, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Labor, Massachusetts State Police, Boston Police Department, and district attorney’s offices and police departments across the country.
The conference is being hosted by the AG’s Office in partnership with the National District Attorneys Association, Microsoft, the National White Collar Crime Center, and the Computer Advanced Technology Forensic Education program. Eight exhibitors will also participate in the conference: Cellebrite, SANS, Nuix, Absolute Software, Paraben Corporation, Guidance Software, JADSoftware, and SRT Wireless.
Since taking office in January 2007, Attorney General Coakley has made prevention and prosecution of cyber crime a priority. Shortly after taking office, Attorney General Coakley established a dedicated Cyber Crime Division within the office’s Criminal Bureau to lead the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Initiative. In late 2007, Attorney General Coakley unveiled “The Massachusetts Strategic Plan for Cyber Crime,” designed to help the Commonwealth develop a statewide capacity to prevent, investigate, and prosecute crimes with a cyber component. The plan calls for law enforcement training, enhanced information sharing, the development of common operating procedures and standards, funding for cyber crime programs, and amending current law as it pertains to cyber crime.
On September 15, 2009, Attorney General Coakley announced the opening of the new state-of-the-art Computer Forensics Lab in Boston, which is part of the Cyber Crime Initiative and is designed to develop a statewide capacity to deal with cyber crime and more efficiently process digital evidence that is present in virtually every investigation. Through the Cyber Crime Initiative, the Attorney General’s Office has provided cyber training for more than 14,000 state and local law enforcement personnel from across the Commonwealth and the nation. The plan is available on the Attorney General’s website at www.mass.gov/ago.
