AG Coakley’s Food Drive Competition Raises More Than 712,000 Pounds of Food; Berman DeValerio Wins

Highest Total in Five Years of Competition; More Than 2.3 Million Pounds of Food, 1.5 Million Meals Provided to Date

BOSTON – Following the two week campaign for donations, Berman DeValerio has been named the winner of the fifth annual Legal Food Frenzy Cup, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced today. In total, the annual competition raised the equivalent of more than 712,000 pounds of food, smashing last year’s record, and providing more than 534,456 meals to people in need.

“Congratulations to Berman DeValerio for winning the Legal Food Frenzy Cup and thank you to all the other participants for joining us in this friendly competition,” AG Coakley said. “The dedication and generosity of the legal community will provide meals throughout the Commonwealth and help families put food on the table.”

The 26 person team representing the law offices of Berman DeValerio collected the equivalent of 43,964 pounds of food overall and 1,690 pounds of food per capita. This is Berman DeValerio’s second year winning the Legal Food Frenzy Cup. Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi LLP, winners of the 2010 and 2011 Legal Food Frenzy Cup, raised the 2nd highest per capita in the law firm category. Ropes & Gray LLP raised the most overall with the equivalent of 92,262 pounds of food, winning the Star of Frenzy Award.

In just a two week period, the Massachusetts legal community raised the equivalent of 712,608 pounds of food, a 48.7% increase from 2013. This represents a record breaking accomplishment and the first time in five years that the Frenzy has surpassed its goal of raising half a million pounds of food.

More than 60 legal organizations across the state signed up to participate in this event. The participants collected food items and monetary donations from March 24th to April 4th, 2014—a traditionally slow time for food bank donations. The first annual Legal Food Frenzy was piloted in the Greater Boston area and has since expanded to benefit all four Massachusetts Food Banks—The Greater Boston Food Bank, Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Worcester County Food Bank, and The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. These four Food Banks serve more than 800 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters that help feed hungry families across the Commonwealth. Over the past five years, the competition has raised more than 2.3 million pounds of food (which includes its equivalent in monetary donations) and provided more than 1,501,031 meals throughout Massachusetts.
