AG Coakley Applauds Proposed Bill to Reduce Gun Violence

BOSTON – Attorney General Martha Coakley today issued the following statement in reaction to Speaker Robert A. DeLeo’s introduction of An Act Relative to the Reduction of Gun Violence:

“Today’s gun violence bill recognizes the critical intersection between gun violence, suicide prevention, mental health care, domestic violence and school safety by tackling them together in a meaningful way. This bill takes important steps to reduce gun violence by ensuring we comply with the national background check system and closing the gun show loophole. I applaud Speaker DeLeo for his leadership on this critical issue to protect our families and communities.

“Massachusetts cannot solve these problems alone, however. We need federal action. I once again call on the federal government to do its part to restrict the flow of illegal guns by passing a federal assault weapons ban and banning high capacity magazines.”
