Kate Morreale
Golden Egg Farm, Poultry and Pottery, Hardwick
After an education in the arts in the Midwest, Kate Morreale established a poultry farm in Orange, Mass., in 1970, selling eggs directly to the consumer. A few years later, she started Goose Hill Farm in New Braintree raising sheep, geese and chickens.
Her current farm, The Golden Egg Farm in Hardwick, has been home to rabbits,
sheep and poultry, though now she keeps only rare breeds of domestic waterfowl
and Bantam chickens. She sells mostly hatching eggs nationwide and ducklings
locally.
Kate maintains that small farms cannot exist without a niche market. Her
next project will be quail eggs.
Kate sells pottery in addition to her farm products. She would like to
see her farm become a showplace for rare breeds as well as a profitable
business.
