Commissioner's OfficeContact the Assistant CommissionerScott J. Soares has worked for the Department of Agricultural Resources since 1996 and during that time has served in a variety of capacities. Hired as the Commonwealth’s first Aquaculture Coordinator, Scott’s work to develop and implement the Aquaculture Development Program has enabled continued growth, diversification and expansion of aquatic cultivation in Massachusetts. Through the innumerable collaborative relationships that were developed as a result of his work, a variety of important opportunities have been developed and seized upon by the aquatic cultivation sector, including agricultural industry promotion, market support and environmental enhancement programs that allow aquacultural enterprises to operate in an economically and environmentally responsible manner. Most recently his work has broadened to include a brief tenure as Acting Director of Agricultural Development, work as the agency’s key contact for Agricultural Commission development and collaboration with the Accelerated Conservation Planning Partnership that works to enhance the delivery of conservation planning services to Massachusetts farms by the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Districts, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. Mr. Soares also served as the Building Manager for the Massachusetts State Exposition Building in West Springfield where more than 1million visitors are anually treated to a taste of Massachusetts during the “Big E”. Scott is also proud to have served as co-chair with Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles for the Massachusetts Dairy Farm Revitlization Task Force during his 11 month tenure as Acting Commissioner of Agricultural Resources. After seven years of active and reserve service to the U.S. Army, Scott graduated Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a double major in Biology and Marine Biology and obtained graduate training at the University of Rhode Island, he resides in Dartmouth with his fiancé.Scott Soares |
