It is expected that anyone responding to an emergency situation, man-made or natural
disaster will be familiar with Basic Incident Command System. This is primarily a "chain of
command," communication system utilized by all emergency management
personel, including your community's public safety departments. National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction will familiarize you with the terms utilized by the federal and state agencies in disaster/emergency situations.
Both Animals in Disaster Modules and the Livestock in Disaster course will provide
the participant with knowledge and skills necessary to guide their community
through preparing itself for disaster/emergency situations. The Massachusetts
Veterinary Medicine Association will accept CEUs for courses provided on-line
by state agencies, including Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)
or federal agencies (FEMA).
Listed below are several links to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on-line training for those who may be involved in responding to an emergency situation involving animals. Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, public safety officials, municipal health officials, municipal animal inspectors, animal control officers, animal shelter or pet store employees and others who work with or care for animals should consider taking one or more of these courses.
