Ban on Deer Importation
issued by Mass. Department of Fish & Wildlife
Chronic Wasting Disease in elk and deer has emerged in recent months as an animal disease concern. In different states, regulation of the movement of farmed deer and elk fall under different jurisdictions. In some states, it is in the state department of agriculture which has authority while in other states, it is the department of fisheries and wildlife. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it is the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) that regulates the movement of deer and elk into the Commonwealth.
Recently as a result of concerns about CWD, the DFW banned the importation of all deer into Massachusetts. A ban on the importation of elk was already in place. The text of the DFW ban and other information related to the ban are attached here for the convenience of web users who might be looking for such information and assume that it would be posted with the Department of Agricultural Resources.
