Horseback Riding Instructor FAQ
How old do I have to be to get a riding instructor license?
You must be at least eighteen years of
age when you apply.
What's required?

If this is your first license, you must have completed a six-month apprenticeship
with a licensed riding instructor, including 60 hours of directly supervised
instruction of mounted students.

If you have been licensed previously by another governmental entity, that can be substituted for an apprenticeship in Massachusetts.

You must pass a written exam administered by the Department.
What's the test about?
- Riding theory
- Safety Laws and regulations pertaining to horses
- Horse anatomy and general health issues.
Once I get my license, how long is it good for?
- It will be good until March 31, at which
time you may renew it.
