Horseback Riding Instructor FAQ 

How old do I have to be to get a riding instructor license?
You must be at least eighteen years of age when you apply.
What's required?
  • If this is your first license, you must have completed a six-month apprenticeship  with a licensed riding instructor, including 60 hours of directly supervised instruction of mounted students.

  • If you have been licensed previously by another governmental entity, that can be substituted for an apprenticeship in Massachusetts.

  • You must pass a written exam administered by the Department.

What's the test about?
  • Riding theory
  • Safety Laws and regulations pertaining to horses
  • Horse anatomy and general health issues.
Once I get my license, how long is it good for?
It will be good until March 31, at which time you may renew it.
