Rabies Pathogenisis

Click on images to view larger size.

Virus normally transmitted by bite. Virus moves from cell to cell on its path to brain.

At end of incubation period, virus reaches the brain. Vrius is distributed from the brain to salivary glands. It is infectious, but still acts normal.

An animal with rabies will either die or have to be destroyed. Although you can't do anything to change this in the wild animal population, you can protect your dog or cat. Don't allow your pet to wander alone, so it won't become exposed to infected animals. Most importantly, make sure your pet's initial rabies vaccinations are done properly and the boosters are kept current.

Animal's brain has become infected enough to affect its behavior.
