AquacultureContact: Sean Bowen, 617-626-1724 The cultivation of marine and freshwater organisms is a very diverse segment of the Massachusetts agriculture industry. Including 9 species of shellfish and 15 species of finfish that are cultured experimentally and commercially, the Commonwealth’s aquaculture industry produces aquatic species for food, education, ornamental, bait and sport fishing activities. The Aquaculture Coordinator's Office at the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources provides a variety of services aimed at the promotion and development of the aquatic cultivation industries of the Bay State. Driven by the Department’s mission to support, promote and enhance the long term viability of agricultural businesses as economically and environmentally sound enterprises, the industry’s need and recommendations put forward by the Massachusetts White Paper and Strategic Plan, the Aquaculture Development Program focuses it’s efforts in 6 primary areas. The Program fosters development of the Massachusetts Aquaculture Industry through efforts aimed at implementation of the Commonwealth’s Aquaculture Strategic Plan including Permit Assistance and Regulatory Streamlining, Technical Assistance and Information Resources, Marketing and Promotional Support, promotion and development of opportunities for Aquaculture Education, Legislatively Directed Projects and direct assistance through an annual Massachusetts Aquaculture Grants program.
