About Massachusetts Lobster

Bet you didn’t know that Boston lobster dealers (and Massachusetts-based lobster dealers, in general) are the chief suppliers of the American Lobster to the world market.

The majority of all lobsters come through Massachusetts dealers, including lobsters from Maine and Canada. At certain times of the year, Massachusetts lobsters are a vital source of supply to both national and global markets, filling the needs of local and tourist businesses.

In 2008, roughly 11.7 million pounds of lobster were landed in Massachusetts by commercial fisherman. Of that figure, more than 7.4 million pounds came from near-shore state waters. In the state’s territorial waters, approximately 335,000 traps are fished by commercial lobstermen, and another 85,000 traps are fished by Massachusetts fishermen just outside state waters using federal licenses.

Commonwealth Quality makes it easy to find lobster from local lobstermen that are safe and sustainably harvested right here in Massachusetts. Lobstermen whose catch bear the seal of Commonwealth Quality maintain safe and environmentally friendly operations that help preserve our coast, stock and biodiversity. Additionally, all certified lobstermen adhere to state and local regulations, and maintain best management practices to ensure a safe and high-quality catch.

We are pleased to bring you Massachusetts lobster -- fished with care and integrity!
