Berkshire County

Farmland

More than 12 percent of the state's farmland is located in Berkshire County, totaling 68,630 acres on 401 farms.

Economics & Employment

  • Berkshire County farms produced almost $54 million in farm products in 2002.
  • 702 workers are employed on 121 farms in Berkshire County. 338 of those workers worked on farms 150 days or more during the year.
  • Berkshire County farms paid more than $5.3 million in wages to workers in 2002.
  • About half of Berkshire County farm operators report farming as their principle occupation. The remainder report principle occupations off the farm.
  • The average Berkshire County farmer is 55 years old and has operated his or her farm for 22 years.
  • The vast majority of Berkshire County farms are family owned and operated, including sole proprietorships, partnerships and family-held corporations.

  • The major commodity group in Berkshire County is dairy products.

  • The second largest commodity group is greenhouse and nursery crops.
