Plymouth County

Farmland

  • More than 12 percent of the state's farmland is located in Plymouth County totaling 59,445 acres on 794 farms.

Economics & Employment

  • Plymouth County farms sold nearly $42.9 million worth of agricultural products in 2002.
  • 1402 workers are employed on 288 farms in Plymouth County. Some 679 of those workers worked on farms 150 days or more during the year.
  • Plymouth County farms paid more than $11.7 million in wages to workers in 2002.
  • Almost 68 percent of Plymouth County farm operators report farming as their principle occupation. The remainder report principle occupations off the farm.
  • The vast majority of Plymouth County farms are family owned and operated, including sole proprietorships, partnerships and family-held corporations.

Crops

  • The major commodity group in Plymouth County is fruits and berries, comprising 64 percent of agricultural sales.
  • A major portion of this category is comprised of cranberry production.
  • Other major crops include greenhouse and nursery, dairy and vegetables.

National Rank

  • Plymouth County ranks 95th among all U.S. counties for farm labor expenses.

  • Massachusetts ranks second in the nation in cranberry production.
