Retired Greyhound Adoption Council

Retired Greyhound Care and Adoption Council

The nine member Retired Greyhound Care and Adoption Council was established by the Massachusetts legislature (Chapter 10 Section 64). The members of the Council were appointed, as directed by statute. The Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, or his designee, serves as Chairperson of the council.

The following organizations are represented by their president, executive director or a designee:

The function of the Council is to encourage and assist in the adoption of retired greyhounds or greyhounds that were bred for racing but never qualified through the administration of the Greyhound Trust Fund (Chapter 10 Section 65). The Council is responsible for adopting rules and regulations for the disbursement of the trust fund that has been established by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 10 Section 65. Pursuant to Chapter 128A, Section 5, the Trust Fund receives one-half of one percent of the live handle of greyhound racing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Grants Awarded

The Greyhound Care and Adoption Council has previously awarded grant funding to non-profit organizations who applied and were determined to be eligible for the funding. The funds were intended to assist the organizations with expenses associated with housing, feeding, spay/neuter, veterinary care, vaccinations, and producing educational materials for potential greyhound adopters, leashes, greyhound appropriate collars, and jackets.

Future Grants

The Council will be offering grant assistance to qualifying organizations. Grants may be awarded at various times during the year so Council urges interested organizations to monitor the Massachusetts Comm-Pass site for posting of available grants. The Council may award a number of smaller grants, larger grants, a combination thereof, or grant products or services that are normally used in the normal course of greyhound care and adoption.
