Boston Public Market ProjectImagine fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farms, poultry, eggs and dairy products - plus fish and seafood form Boston and New England ports! Fresh-from-the oven bakery goods, maple syrup, honey, preserves and dozens more specialty food items from local producers. An indoor year round public market could also offer colorful cut flowers, plants, nursery products, wreaths and floral decorations for every occasion and holiday season. The Boston Public Market Association is a non-profit group working together "to facilitate the creation of a Boston Public Market by providing vision, accountability, leadership, initiative, direction, oversight, promotion, and standards for funders, partners, civic leaders and decision makers so that the public market becomes a reality. Its vision is to "provide fresh and locally produced food to city residents, offering quality and freshness at a reasonable price." What will the Public Market be Like?Devoted to the year round sale of locally grown fresh foods, specialty and horticultural products, the market would be up to 40,000 square feet under one roof with space for outdoor vending and parking. A public market is made up of independent businesses that are operated by their owners, unlike franchises. The emphasis is on local merchants selling local products; day stalls would be available for farmers as well. The market would be operated by a public-private partnership under a non-profit structure. It will foster economic benefits and also the creation of jobs within the community. An educational component to the market will offer programs for children and adults to learn about local farming, sustainable agriculture, nutrition and wholesome food preparation.
