Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farms

Community-supported agriculture is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. It is a relatively new socio-economic model of food production, sales, and distribution aimed at both increasing the quality of food and the quality of care given the land, plants and animals – while substantially reducing potential food losses and financial risks for the farmer. CSA’s focus is usually on a system of weekly delivery or pick-up of vegetables, sometimes including flowers, fruits, herbs and even milk or meat products.

Community supported agriculture is a relatively new idea in farming, one that has been gaining momentum since its introduction to the United States from Europe in the mid-1980s. The CSA concept originated in the 1960s in Switzerland and Japan, where consumers interested in safe food and farmers seeking stable markets for their crops joined together in economic partnerships.

By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA. Most CSA farmers prefer that members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or monthly payments. Some CSA farms also require that members work a small number of hours on the farm during the growing season.

Below is a list of over 100 CSA farms across the Commonwealth. Questions, contact Lisa Damon, Lisa.Damon@state.ma.us, 617-626-1731.

We hope our members will view themselves as part of a movement and understand that their monetary support is essential to its continuation and growth. This year we intend to distribute vegetables for 20 weeks. Distributions will start sometime in early June and end in late October. For the 2009 season we are offering Full and Part shares. In general, we intend a Full share to provide for 4-5 people, and a Part for 1-2. The membership cost of a Full share will be $550 and $300 for a Part. Truth is, we're not so much looking for 2009 CSA "customers" as we are seeking savvy and committed partners in this effort to create a saner, healthier, more local (and more delicious) food paradigm here in western Massachusetts -- and across our planet.

I have a very tiny, one person farm. I try to grow a wide variety of vegetables for as long a season as possible. This is the third year of the CSA and I have much to learn. So far members have been very happy with their shares, especially the mesclun and flowers. In Leyden, members enjoy home delivery. Last year the shares went for 23 weeks. This year will be longer, I hope. I especially like growing beans, shell beans, lettuce, mesclun and trying out a variety of heirloom and unusual vegetables, ie. baby corn and rampacante squash. I like to grow what is not often found in the store and always make flavor a priority. I have been gardening organically in this location for 33 years.
