Aerial Spraying completed successfully |
August 25, 2006
Spraying went well last night and we were able to successfully complete the entire identified spray block. Two planes were used last night to complete the spraying which was concluded approximately 10:15 pm.
No further aerial spraying is currently planned but aerial spraying cannot be ruled out in the future. People are advised to continue to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes and use insect repellant.

Spraying went well again last night and we were able to spray approximately 200,000 additional acres, bringing the total to 350,000 of the projected 425,000 acres. Weather conditions (temperature fell below 58 degrees) caused us to stop spraying at around 12:15 this morning.
We used three planes last night. Weather permitting our plan is to complete spraying the remainder of the area (approximately 75,000 acres) tonight. Our ability to complete the spray is solely based on weather conditions - the concern for this evening is rain and cool temperatures. If we cannot finish tonight, we will try again on Friday.

State health and environmental officials announced that aerial spraying will be deployed for the first time in 16 years to minimize of threat of human biting mosquitoes that carry Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
The spraying of more than 159,000 acres of land in Southern Massachusetts will be done shortly after sunset, possibly as early as Monday August 7th, 2006, and is expected to last until about 1 a.m. if not completed in one night, it would be finished the next day at the same time.
Alert: Areas Excluded during the aerial application to suppress mosquitoes infected with EEEv
Earlier reports stated that schools, daycare centers and campgrounds would be excluded. This is not the case. Areas that were not excluded include schools, daycares, recreational camps, and recreational pools. These areas will be treated.
The areas that will be excluded are fish hatcheries, certified organic farms, priority habitats for the most sensitive rare and endangered species, and surface drinking water supplies that are located within the proposed treatment area.
The area includes:
Middleborough, Carver, Kingston, Plympton and Lakeville; and partial areas of the following towns: New Bedford, Acushnet, Duxbury, Halifax, Bridgewater, Raynham, Freetown, Taunton, Rochester, Plymouth.
Adjacent towns include:
Pembroke, Berkley, Dartmouth and Wareham.
