Massachusetts farmers' markets are open and overflowing with an abundance of locally grown and produced foods. To help you find a market near you, the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture has updated its directory of the 89 farmers' markets currently operating in cities and towns across the Commonwealth this season.

Massachusetts Farmers' Markets 2001 is a full-color brochure that provides locations, times and opening and closing dates for each market. For a free copy of Massachusetts Farmers' Markets 2001 call the Massachusetts "Down on the Farm" line toll-free at 1-877-MASSGROWN (1-877-627-7476) or visit www.massgrown.org.

At these festive outdoor markets, shoppers will find an array of freshly harvested fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, as well as a variety of other local farm products such as maple, honey, eggs, turkey products, baked goods and jams and jellies, all sold directly by the farmer.

"Locally grown produce looks great at the farmers' markets this year," says Jay Healy, state Commissioner of Food and Agriculture. "Despite some bumpy weather early in the season, we've mostly had good growing conditions this summer. The markets have an excellent selection and the quality is very high."

Most farmers' markets continue to the end of October with some staying open through Thanksgiving.
