Massachusetts Farmers’ Market Week Activities - 2001

Boston City Hall Plaza Farmers’ Market - Monday, August 20, Farmers’ Market Week Kick-off. Market Hours, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm. Noon - Reading of Massachusetts Farmers’ Market Week Proclamation. Noon - 2:00 pm - Cooking demonstration by Chefs Charles Draghi and Wil Gilson, Gilson Herb Farm; Heirloom Tomato Tasting sponsored by Keown Orchard and Eastern Native Seed Conservancy; Cooking demonstration, nutrition information by University of Massachusetts Extension and Massachusetts WIC Program; Information on local farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and Pick-Your-Own farms from the MA Dept. of Food and Agriculture; Raffle sponsored by Federation of Massachusetts Farmers’ Markets; 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Bagpipe Music: Massachusetts Specialty Food Producers, all day, sponsored by the Friends of the Boston Public Market.

Amesbury Farmers’ Market, Municipal Parking Lot on Friend Street, Sunday, August 19, Market Hours 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Live Music, As the Crow Flies; Paint the farmers’ market truck; Fire Dept. bringing hook and ladder for children to explore; Small farm animal petting zoo; Face Painting; 11:00 am – 11:30 am, Make your own corn and tassel finger puppet with Martha Dana; 11:30 am, Puppet Show; Noon, Cooking Demonstration with Chef Tony Ortu, Wild Bites. All events free except face painting ($1).

Boston/Copley Square, along St. James Ave., Tuesday, August 21, Market Hours 11:00 am – 6:00 pm. Live music, cooking demonstrations with local chefs, heirloom tomato tasting, recipes, samples, WIC items, kids activities, and much more from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Cambridge/Central Square Farmers’ Market, Bishop Allen Drive by Norfolk Street, Monday, August 20. Market Hours, Noon – 6:00 pm. Cooking demonstrations, heirloom tomato tasting, samples, raffle prizes, recipes, kids’ chalk drawing, WIC nutritionist, and more, from Noon – 3:00 pm.

Framingham/Route 9 Farmers’ Market, Borders Books Parking Lot, Thursday, August 23, Market Hours, 11:30 am – 5:30 pm. Cooking demonstration, tomato tasting, samples, raffles, prizes, recipes, WIC Van (Blood pressure, eye and ear screenings) and more from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.

Lowell Farmers’ Market, JFK Plaza, City Hall, Friday, August 24. Market Hours 7:30 am – 2:30 am, D.J. will provide entertainment from 9:30 am – Noon.

Marblehead Farmers’ Market, Middle School, 89 Village St., Saturday, August 25. Market Hours, 9:00 am – Noon. Storyteller Tony Toledo; Cooking Demonstration by chef Dean Chapas of The Atlantic Grill; Sculptural Felting Demonstration – Doll making with wool.

Somerville Farmers’ Market, Davis Square, Day and Herbert Streets. Wednesday, August 22. Market Hours, Noon – 6:00 pm. Red Bones cooking demonstration (proceeds to benefit Project Soup), Equal Exchange coffee samples, folk music, heirloom tomato tasting, WIC nutritionist, raffle prizes, recipes, kid’s chalk drawing, farm animals and more, from Noon – 5:00 pm.

Springfield Downtown Farmers’ Market, Tower Square Park, Friday, August 24, Market Hours, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Live performances by “Platinum Buckets” and “The Badgirls” Step Team, CISA’s Talking Carrot, cooking demonstrations, WIC items, tomato tasting, samples, prizes, recipes and more.

Sturbridge Farmers’ Market, Basketville Parking Lot, Route 20, Thursday, August 23, Market Hours, 11:00 am – 3:30 pm, Cooking Demonstration by the University of Massachusetts Extension and prizes and surprises.
