Governor Jane Swift has proclaimed August 19 - 25, 2001 Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week. Farmers' markets across the state are taking part in the celebration by hosting special events.

Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week will officially kick-off on Monday, August 20, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at Boston's City Hall Plaza Farmers' Market with speakers, tomato tastings, nutrition information and a special cooking demonstration with chefs Charles Draghi and Wil Gilson.
Farmers' markets are festive outdoor markets where shoppers find an array of freshly harvested fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, as well as a variety of other local farm products such as maple, honey, eggs, turkey products, baked goods and jams and jellies, all sold directly by the farmer.

Other Farmers' Market Week Celebrations across the state include a variety of special features such as tomato tastings, farm animals, music and more. The celebration is coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture and the Federation of Massachusetts Farmers' Markets.

In the proclamation Governor Swift cites the markets' contributions to heighten public awareness of the agricultural diversity of Massachusetts and the benefits of buying local and preserving open space.
