Types & Licensing Standards
Pesticides are
generally classified as either General Useor Restricted-Use.
General Use pesticides are products that may be purchased and used by the general public (homeowner) without a pesticide license if they are applying them to their own property. However, residential properties with four or more units may not be treated by an unlicensed individual even if they are the owner of the
property.
Commercial pesticide applicators, such as pest control or lawncare technicians who apply pesticides for hire
must be licensed to use general use pesticides to apply pesticides to the
property of others. All individuals who apply pesticides for hire or compensation for any purpose or on any property other than as provided by the definition of "private applicator" must be licensed .
Restricted-Use pesticides may be applied only by or under the direct supervision of trained
and certified applicators. Pesticides may be classified as restricted-use by the EPA or by the Massachusetts
Pesticide Board Subcommittee due to toxicity or environmental concerns.
Commercial pesticide applicators must be certified or under the direct supervision of a certified application
to use restricted-use pesticides.
Dealers selling restricted use pesticides must be licensed and may sell
restricted use pesticides only to certified applicators. Commercial growers
using restricted use pesticides must be certified.
