Agro-Envronmental Technology Grant Program

Background

The Agro Environmental Technology Grant Program was created in 1996 by the Massachusetts legislature to address agriculturally related environmental concerns and agricultural development needs and opportunities. It was authorized in 1995 with a budget of $1.2 million that was expended over a seven-year period (1996 to 2002).

Fifty-nine exciting projects in a variety of agricultural sectors were funded through this program. Here is a summary of a few of the projects. The Agro-Technology Program funded efforts to develop a cooperative for growers in the Berkshires for lamb producers and in the southeastern counties for flower growers.

Cranberry producers have benefited from projects that developed new recommendations for environmental practices. Apple producers have been assisted through improved marketing strategies and from experiments with new methods to eradicate weeds.

Livestock producers have been helped through new marketing information as well as through new solutions to environmental issues researched with funding from this program.

This summary is just a sampling of the diverse projects funded under the Agro-Tech Program. To review past project descriptions click here.
