Project will develop IPM practices for beach plum production, develop a marketing program for graded quality beach re-establish the Cape Cod Beach Plum Growers plum products, and Association. $16,900 -1997

The Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire Conservation Districts, Northampton - "Integrating Global Positioning and Universal Product Code Systems for Yield, Quality and Marketing Improvement for Orchards". Two new technologies will research, test and demonstrate an alternative to gathering yield, quality and marketing information which may help reduce nutrient and pesticide use and increase profitability. $12,084 -1999

Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire Conservation Districts, Northampton - "Expanding the Commercialization of Thermal Aquatic Technology For Weed, Fungi and Insect Control". Expanded thermal aquatic research and testing is proposed including new and innovative mechanical attachments and methods. Orchard research will continue and several new types of agricultural crops will receive treatment and study. $25,000 -1997

Hamilton Orchards, New Salem - "Greenhouse Raspberry Production for Winter Sales". A demonstration project will establish a site for production of high value, fresh, locally produced raspberries during the winter season. $7,054 -2001

Massachusetts Cider Guild - "An Educational Project for Cider Mill Certification". A project to educate cider producers and town Board of Health inspectors on up to date processing methods and to create a certified label. $3,000 -1996

MA Fruit & Vegetable Growers AssociationCold Spring Orchard Research & Education CenterAn Orchard System for Monitoring and Modeling Apple Scab, Disseminating Apple Scab Model Regionally, and Managing Orchard Fungicide Use – This project will develop a system for monitoring and modeling apple scab in orchards using on-site weather data collection equipment. The data collected will be used in a computer model to predict apple scab infection periods and spore maturity. In the long- this system could assist growers better manage fungicide use potentially resulting a decrease in use and cost savings.
Funding request: $5,000 - 2003

Massachusetts Fruit Grower's Association, Inc., Shelburne - "Ribes Cultivar Screen For White Pine Blister Rust Disease Immunity And Documentation of Current Ribes Restrictions in New York and New England". The process of reviewing the criteria for the continued restriction of current and gooseberry production in Massachusetts will begin in this project. Data on the performance of new disease "immune" cultivars will be presented as well as documentation on the status and rationale behind the regulations in neighboring states. $1,820 -2002

New England Fruit Consultants1-MCP: AN innovative Technology for Improved Fruit Quality Targeted for the Massachusetts Apple Industry – This project will evaluate the feasibility of using 1-MCP as a post-harvest treatment to improve the fruit quality of apples kept in long-term storage. The project will target varieties that are commonly produced in the region and that are economically significant to the Massachusetts apple industry. In addition, we will modify the process by which fruit are currently treated with 1-MCP to better suit the size and scope of storage facilities in Massachusetts.

A distribution and promotion system will be developed focusing on the last defendable advantage that local fruit and vegetable farmers hold in a competitive global market - the ability to deliver the freshest and most flavorful products. $39,740 -2000
