By building technological and food safety improvements into their operations, and by pooling products and working together, these growers hope to become a competitive force in the marketplace with their local grown value added products. $22,500 -1999

Coonamessett Farm, East Falmouth - "Outside Hydroponic Production Using Solar Hot Frames". New materials and technology will be applied to traditional hot frames to test this new concept in hydroponic salad mix production. $15,300 -1999

Coonamessett Farm, East Falmouth - "Comparing Hydroponic Production Strategies". Goal is to determine which method of hydroponic production is best suited for growing salad mix. Included in this study will be an outdoor open air system. The project may provide a mechanism for small farms to get into this growing market using simple technology that can be utilized as a more environmentally sound/cost effective means to produce salad crops. $11,120 -1998

Edward Stockman, Summit Farm, Plainfield - "Growing Crops of Lesser Value Under Row Covers". On farm research will investigate the benefits and economic feasibility of using row covers on lesser value crops to expand early season revenues. $704 -2000

A distribution and promotion system will be developed focusing on the last defendable advantage that local fruit and vegetable farmers hold in a competitive global market - the ability to deliver the freshest and most flavorful products. $39,740 -2000

UMass, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences Department, Amherst - "Introduction of Two New Crops for Massachusetts Growers". This project will refine growing techniques, IPM practices and further establish urban markets for local grown calabasa and recao crops. $7,373 -1999

UMass Vegetable Team, Amherst - "Introduction of New Crops for Massachusetts Growers". On farm research will attempt to grow produce to meet the growing demand of the urban Latino market. Extension fact sheets and presentations will provide an opportunity for vegetable growers to examine this market. $15,000 -1998

UMass, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Amherst - "Expanding Specialty Pepper Production and Integrated Pepper Management on Mass. Vegetable Farms". Research will provide growers with information needed to expand pepper markets, expand adoption of Integrated Crop Management in peppers on farms and expand on new environmentally sound production practices. $16,753 -1997
